Fentanyl: What You Should Know
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. It is a prescription drug that is typically used to treat patients with severe acess the dark web pain, such as those with cancer. However, fentanyl is also illegally manufactured and distributed, often mixed with other drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
Fentanyl contamination primarily occurs in powders and pressed pills. We have the right to know the ingredients of what we put into our bodies, whether what we’re ingesting is food, alcohol, or drugs. Over the years, people who use drugs have developed strategies to keep our people safe. If you’re a veteran who uses opioids, ask your VA provider about prescribing naloxone, which is free.
The Dangers of Fentanyl
So when you go to a place where you have to do drug testing even the people there can kinda look at you kinda weird um no matter what their reason is (Respondent 2, multiracial female, age 29, urine testing group). They were not just close friends, but a couple of people I met at the clinic and stuff, and they actually were people who really want to know if the fentanyl is actually in the drugs they are using, and they actually use a little bit more than I do. On a daily basis they still use, so I felt like it was very important to have (Respondent 55, white female, age 28, residue testing group). Another participant described handing out 5–6 of her test strips to people she knew from the methadone clinic, who had previously mentioned wanting to know if fentanyl was in their drug supply. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, led several senators from both parties in introducing the Fentanyl Safe Testing and Overdose Prevention Act on Thursday to clarify, in federal law, that fentanyl testing strips are not considered to be drug paraphernalia. WASHINGTON — Texans in Congress are pushing bipartisan legislation to increase access to fentanyl testing strips after a similar effort fizzled in the Texas Legislature earlier this year.
Fentanyl is extremely dangerous because it is so potent. Just a small amount can cause an overdose, and many people who use drugs containing fentanyl are unaware that it is present. This has led to a significant increase in overdose deaths in recent years. In 2017, more than 28,000 people in the United States died from overdoses involving fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

Every Wednesday, the SUPHR staff partnered with South Philly Punks with Lunch at Broad and Snyder. They gave out homemade food, drinks, clothing, and additional harm reduction supplies. We want to meet people where they’re at today with their drug use so that we can keep them with us and build that trust. Then, if and when they want to change their use – maybe stop, reduce or switch to a safer drug – we’re here for them.
